Okay Its time for me to do the thing!

I want to start off by saying that I'm not an expert at digital painting, I like to think that through diligent study and a lot of reprimanding by ~Snapdragoon I have garnered a little bit of technique and hopefully I can pass on what little I know to you!

I will begin with some good things: I applaud your first foray into digital painting, and I think you used a very cute and stylized design to paint on. This is a good thing, in that the simpler, cuter designs can be easier to paint, with less complexity in curves and 3D shape. I also see that you put a lot of work into making the silhouette clean and crisp.

If I had to mention any ONE thing I think you could improve on, it would be in contrast. I see you have shades and highlights, but they tend to feel a little noncommittal in some places. It feels like you weren't absolutely certain the light or shade should have gone there. One of the nicest things about shading is that you don't have to be really exact in its early stages. You want to use broader sweeping strokes to bring out some of the general shapes and stuff. Also make sure to do shading on a separate layer, you don't want to lose the detail in coloring and fur texture (if you implement that in later pictures). A good technique for shading is to make a base layer for the color, and on a new layer, paint in a greyish tone with the layer set to "multiply". Also if you can, set the picture to black and white. Its easier to measure contrast when the picture is monochromatic.
the result with multiply shading looks like this picture: [link]
and here is a tutorial on it (grypwolf DOES use multiply, even though it may not be obvious in this tutorial): [link]

NOW, multiply shading is NOT the only way. You can do a million other techniques.

I want to finish by saying you can ALWAYS learn a new trick when digital painting, and I suggest you try to do so! There are a million tutorials on dA for digital painting, and depending on the style you want to try out, you can do a quick search and learn all you need to know. I really like this picture because it looks better than any first-time shading and painting attempt I ever made. It took me years to muster up the courage to try again, and I kind of hate myself for that. I think you should keep on trying! Your skills will only get better!

I gave 3 stars on technique because I know you can improve. I think you have all the potential you need to get better and blow minds.
